Texas Tech’s 120-Yard Deficit Was the Least Important Number in Corvallis

Texas Tech beat Oregon State 35–24 while getting outgained 472–352. That is exactly the kind of box score that makes a ranked road win feel fraudulent.

I’m not buying that reading. Oregon State piled up passing yards because Texas Tech removed almost everything else.

The official game statistics show the Beavers rushing for only 55 yards. Texas Tech ran for 155. Oregon State quarterback Braden Atkinson threw for 413 yards and Jesse Legree caught 240, but the Beavers converted just 4 of 15 third downs and 1 of 3 fourth downs.

Texas Tech went 8 of 16 on third down and converted its only fourth-down attempt. That is a 12-play difference in the four possession-down situations. Passing yards tell us Oregon State moved the ball. Those conversion numbers tell us which team kept finishing drives.

The Red Raiders also made Oregon State one-dimensional. J’Koby Williams ran for 116 yards; no Beaver reached 21. When one offense can run and the other cannot, the trailing team often accumulates impressive air yards while playing the game its opponent is willing to allow.

There is a real concern here. Giving up 417 passing yards is not a sustainable habit, and Texas Tech cannot count on every opponent wasting production between the 20s. A stronger red-zone passing attack turns this into a very different night.

Still, the idea that the Red Raiders were lucky because they lost total yardage misses the point. They won the run game by 100 yards, won third down and won fourth down. Those are not cosmetic details. They are the machinery of possession football.

The fourth quarter made the difference plain. With Oregon State still within one score, Texas Tech produced 14 points while allowing three. The Beavers had spent the night creating yards; the Red Raiders still had the better way to close a drive and close a game.

My verdict: Texas Tech’s defense was imperfect, not ineffective. Oregon State won the spectacular number. The Red Raiders won the useful ones—and left Corvallis 2–0 because of it.
