Louisville's Brown-Lubin Tandem Is More Than Hype—It's a Two-Sided Upset Formula

Preseason honors often read like inventory: a list of good players attached to a team before any games have been played. Louisville's newest recognition deserves more context.

Running back Isaac Brown and defensive end Clev Lubin were named second-team preseason All-Americans by The Sporting News, and Louisville was the only ACC program with multiple players on the publication's two teams, according to the school's August 7 announcement.

The important part is not simply that Louisville has two decorated players. It is where they play and how their production interacts. Brown can generate explosive offense without a long drive. Lubin can destroy a drive before an offense reaches its best calls. One creates cheap yards; the other creates expensive downs.

That pairing gives Louisville a credible upset formula against the best teams on its schedule.

Brown changes the number of snaps Louisville needs

Brown's 2025 season was interrupted, but the efficiency remained exceptional. His official Louisville biography credits him with 884 rushing yards and seven touchdowns in nine games, an average of 8.8 yards per carry. He returned for the Boca Raton Bowl and produced 102 yards and two touchdowns on 10 carries.

Efficiency at that level changes game management. A conventional offense may need eight or 10 successful plays to travel the field. Brown can erase multiple downs with one crease. Louisville can score without exposing its quarterback to a high number of obvious passing situations.

That matters against opponents with more overall depth. The longer a drive becomes, the more chances a superior defense has to win a block, disguise a coverage or create a penalty. Explosive rushing compresses the contest. It allows Louisville to preserve portions of the playbook and forces safeties to participate earlier.

Brown is not valuable only because of total yardage. His value is the shape of the yardage. In 2025 he recorded a 205-yard game on 14 carries against Boston College and produced touchdown runs of 78 and 53 yards in other games. Those plays alter expected points immediately.

Lubin attacks the downs opponents want to avoid

Lubin's impact works in the opposite direction. Brown skips steps for Louisville's offense; Lubin adds steps for the opponent.

In his first Louisville season, Lubin recorded 61 tackles, 13.5 tackles for loss, 8.5 sacks and three forced fumbles. The Cardinals' official preseason All-ACC release notes that he finished tied for fourth in the conference in sacks and seventh in tackles for loss. His roster biography says he appeared in all 13 games.

A sack is valuable beyond the lost yardage. It changes the menu. Second-and-14 or third-and-11 reduces the credibility of the run, narrows the route combinations an offense can call and allows the defense to substitute for pressure or coverage. A forced fumble adds direct possession value.

Lubin therefore affects Brown's workload even when the two are never on the field together. A negative play can create a punt. A punt creates another possession. Another possession creates another opportunity for Brown to turn one block into a scoring chance.

The opener is built to test the formula

Louisville begins the season against No. 10 Ole Miss in Nashville on Sunday, September 6, at 7:30 p.m. ET on ABC. The official game announcement makes the neutral-site opener one of the earliest national comparison points of the season.

Ole Miss enters the coaches poll 13 places above unranked Louisville and was picked third in the SEC preseason media poll. That creates a clean opportunity for the Cardinals: beat a top-10 opponent on a neutral field and the national ranking can change immediately.

The matchup will test both sides of Louisville's equation. Brown must create efficient early-down offense against SEC size. Lubin must make the Ole Miss offense play behind schedule. If neither happens, Louisville may be forced into a higher-volume game in which depth and passing efficiency decide the result. If both happen, the Cardinals can control pace without needing to dominate every snap.

The calendar rewards an early answer

The opener is followed by a short turnaround for a Friday home game against Villanova on September 11. Louisville then hosts SMU on September 19, facing the team picked directly ahead of it in the ACC preseason poll.

That sequence makes the Ole Miss game more than a standalone showcase. It can establish Louisville's operating identity before a conference game with immediate standings leverage. The ACC preseason poll placed Louisville third with 2,569 points and SMU second with 2,794.

A 3-0 start with wins over Ole Miss and SMU would not guarantee anything, but it would answer two different questions. Louisville would have a national-quality nonconference win and a head-to-head advantage over its closest projected ACC competitor.
