Lane Kiffin Is the Distraction. Pete Golding’s Defense Is the Real Story.

Mounted patrols. Extra police. A former coach returning with LSU. Everything around Ole Miss this week is designed to make Lane Kiffin the story.

He is not the football story that matters most.

This is Pete Golding’s first real chance to show that Ole Miss did more than preserve Kiffin’s roster after Kiffin left. The Rebels promoted their defensive coordinator, kept quarterback Trinidad Chambliss and running back Kewan Lacy, and carried a 13-game home winning streak into the season. That continuity is why No. 8 Ole Miss can enter a top-10 game looking familiar.

Familiar is not the same as independent.

The official Ole Miss preview says No. 7 LSU is averaging 586 yards and 48 points through two games. Sam Leavitt has thrown for 574 yards, while the Tigers have rushed for 456 and scored eight times on the ground. Their defense has added 10 sacks and 17 tackles for loss.

That makes Golding’s defense—not Kiffin’s reception—the revealing matchup. Can a head coach hired for defense make LSU play an uncomfortable game? Can Ole Miss tackle well enough to keep Leavitt from turning broken plays into explosives? Those answers will tell us more about the post-Kiffin program than any camera shot of the opposing sideline.

Ole Miss has plenty of offensive proof. Chambliss threw for 314 yards and ran for 71 in last year’s 24–19 win over LSU. Deuce Alexander already has 235 receiving yards this season. Kiffin himself pointed to Chambliss and Lacy as Heisman-level returners, according to Reuters’ September 15 report.

The counterargument is obvious: coaching drama affects preparation, and Kiffin knows Golding’s system better than almost anyone. That history matters. It just should not swallow the evaluation.

My take: Ole Miss–LSU is not primarily a revenge referendum. It is the first honest audit of Golding’s program. If Ole Miss still looks like Kiffin’s old team, the transition remains incomplete. If the defense dictates the terms, Ole Miss will have shown exactly what changed when Kiffin left.
