Is Iowa’s Offense More Trustworthy Than Michigan’s?

Put Iowa and Michigan on the same field, and almost everyone starts with the same assumption: Michigan has the real offense; Iowa has the unit merely trying not to ruin the defense’s work.

That assumption may already be stale.

Iowa did not just beat Northern Iowa 55–0. The Hawkeyes rushed for 422 yards and produced three 100-yard backs in the same game for the first time in 40 years. Hank Brown completed all 12 of his passes for 153 yards and two touchdowns. Through three games, he has completed 72.6 percent of his throws without a turnover.

Iowa’s official recap deserves the obvious disclaimer: Northern Iowa is not Michigan. But trust is not the same thing as ceiling. Iowa knows what it wants to do, has multiple backs capable of doing it and has a quarterback making the defense pay when it overloads the box.

Michigan is more explosive and less settled. Bryce Underwood completed 19 of 25 passes for 223 yards and two touchdowns against UTEP, his cleanest game of the season. Yet the Wolverines’ official recap also shows the offense turning it over twice and falling behind 14–7 before taking control after halftime.

That is the difference. Michigan can produce a gear Iowa may not have. Iowa has shown fewer ways to knock itself off schedule.

The counterargument is powerful: Iowa’s 422-yard rushing day came against an FCS opponent, while Michigan has already beaten Oklahoma. If the Hawkeyes’ run game is ordinary against Big Ten speed, Brown will have to create on obvious passing downs in the Big House. We have not seen enough to assume he can.

Still, the No. 17 Hawkeyes and No. 18 Wolverines are not bringing the offensive identities their logos suggest. Michigan brings the more talented mystery. Iowa brings the more coherent plan.

My verdict is not that Iowa owns the better offense. It is that Iowa currently owns the more trustworthy one. Michigan can change that with consistency. Until then, the offense everyone expects to be the liability may be the one with fewer unresolved questions.
