Should the SEC Really Expel LSU Over Players Who Aren’t Even on the Roster?

Is the SEC really prepared to use its nuclear option over two players who are not even on LSU's roster?

LSU deserves criticism for trying to add former NFL players Dae'Quan Wright and Zxavian Harris. Lane Kiffin and the school challenged a conference rule, won a temporary court order and turned an eligibility dispute into a public power struggle. But LSU then submitted its final 105-man roster without either player. SEC leaders are still scheduled to discuss expulsion Thursday, according to the Associated Press.

What problem would expulsion solve now?

LSU already surrendered the advantage

The SEC's strongest argument was competitive integrity: LSU might use players the league considered ineligible while the lawsuit dragged on. That is no longer happening. The Tigers filled the final spots with cornerback Aidan Anding and defensive end Gabriel Reliford, Reuters reported Wednesday.

LSU's 51-10 win over Clemson did not depend on the disputed players, either. The official statistics show LSU outgained Clemson 644-145, ran 94 plays to 48 and held the Tigers to one conversion on 13 third downs.

StatTake's Week 1 model ranks LSU eighth nationally in EPA margin and second in defensive EPA allowed. It is only one game and not yet opponent-adjusted, but the point is obvious: the eligible roster produced the domination.

Rules matter. So does proportion.

The SEC has a legitimate counterargument. What happens if every member runs to a friendly courthouse whenever it dislikes a conference ruling? At some point, shared rules become optional.

Fine LSU. Suspend coaches if the rules allow it. Fight the injunction and establish that the SEC can enforce its professional-experience restriction. If LSU later defies a final ruling, then discuss the last resort.

But expelling a founding football power would disrupt every sport, future schedules, media agreements and historic rivalries. Why create all of that damage after LSU submitted a compliant roster?

The SEC should beat LSU's argument in court—not overreact because LSU temporarily won one round. Right now, expulsion would be the loudest response and the least useful one.
