Oregon’s Backup Quarterback Made Its Biggest Win More Convincing

The obvious story from Oregon’s 41–27 win over No. 12 USC is the one nobody wanted: Dante Moore left after a targeting hit late in the second quarter.

The more revealing story is what happened next. Oregon did not shrink.

Dylan Raiola came off the bench and completed 19 of 25 passes for 289 yards, two touchdowns and no interceptions. With USC tying the game at 27 early in the fourth quarter, Raiola led a 75-yard touchdown drive instead of asking Oregon’s defense to protect him. The Ducks then stopped USC on downs and pulled away.

That sequence matters more than simply saying Oregon has a talented backup. Plenty of talented backups can keep a playbook alive against an overmatched opponent. Raiola entered a ranked road game, after an emotional injury, and kept Oregon playing aggressively.

The official USC box score shows the difference. Oregon averaged 7.4 yards per play, converted 6 of 12 third downs and scored on all six red-zone trips. USC went 2 of 11 on third down. That is not a quarterback surviving. It is a team maintaining its structure.

The counterargument is fair: Moore’s health is still the most important Oregon issue, and one excellent relief appearance does not prove Raiola can reproduce Moore’s command over several weeks. USC also gained 446 yards, so this was hardly a clean afternoon.

Still, depth is usually discussed like insurance. Oregon turned it into evidence. The Ducks lost the player around whom the offense was built, watched USC erase the lead, and still produced the game’s best fourth-quarter football.

My verdict: Oregon’s biggest win did more than improve its résumé. It showed the Ducks can absorb the kind of disruption that normally changes a season. Moore remains the starter and the health concern is real. But Oregon’s margin for error is now visibly wider than most contenders’.
