Does Duke Have the ACC’s Best Résumé?

Miami is No. 6. Louisville is No. 16. SMU is No. 22.

Duke has 20 AP poll points and no number next to its name.

That order may reflect ceiling. It does not reflect résumé.

Duke’s official Week 4 game notes make the overlooked case cleanly: the Blue Devils are one of only five 3–0 teams with two Power Four wins and a true road victory. They beat Tulane 17–3, rallied past Illinois 31–27 on the road and handled Stanford 35–7.

No, Stanford is not a great win. But Duke has already shown three different versions of itself.

Against Tulane, Nate Sheppard ran for 227 yards while the defense allowed three points. At Illinois, Duke climbed out of a 24–14 hole. Against Stanford, Sheppard scored three touchdowns, the offense rushed for 268 yards and the defense controlled the game again in an official 35–7 conference win.

That is more useful evidence than three comfortable wins built the same way.

It also matters that the Blue Devils did it after replacing Darian Mensah. Walker Eget has not needed to imitate Miami’s new star for Duke to remain functional.

The counterargument is strong: Miami has looked far more explosive, and Louisville’s win over ranked SMU carries more weight than any single Duke result. A résumé is not the same thing as a power rating. If the question is who has the highest ceiling, Duke is not the automatic answer.

But poll voters are supposed to reward what teams have done, not only what their quarterbacks might become. Duke has won with defense, rushing volume and a road comeback. The Blue Devils are not asking voters to imagine competence. They have put it on film three times.

My verdict: Duke may not be the ACC’s best team, but it owns the league’s most complete early résumé. Twenty poll points undersell how much real information Manny Diaz’s team has already provided.
