Boise State Won the CFP Argument. It Did Not Win the Group of Six Race.

Boise State did exactly what a Group of Six playoff contender is supposed to do: beat another contender and put the comparison on the field. That does not end the race. It gives the Broncos the best argument in it.

The official Boise State recap reads like two different games. Memphis led 17–3 after hitting an 87-yard touchdown pass and an 80-yard touchdown run. Boise State then scored 35 of the final 38 points, held the Tigers scoreless after halftime and won 38–20.

Boise State gained 578 yards, ran for 357 and produced 28 first downs. Dylan Riley carried 19 times for a career-high 206 yards—10.8 per attempt—while Maddux Madsen threw for 221 yards and added a rushing touchdown. When the game became a possession fight, Boise State owned it.

The résumé win is real

This result matters more than a generic home win because the 2026 playoff format reserves only one guaranteed place for the highest-ranked team from the Group of Six leagues. Memphis entered 2–0 with a road win over UNLV. Boise State entered 0–1 after losing at Oregon. The Broncos needed a direct answer, and they got one.

The offense answered a two-score deficit without abandoning the run. The defense intercepted Marcus Stokes, generated eight tackles for loss and allowed no second-half points. Cam Bates added a 72-yard punt-return touchdown. Every unit changed the game.

But here is the part that should slow the coronation: Memphis still gained 519 yards, and two snaps produced 167 of them. Boise State cannot keep spotting good teams explosive touchdowns and assume 357 rushing yards will erase the damage.

Why nitpick an 18-point win over a legitimate contender? Because the playoff race is not judged on one Saturday. Boise State owns the head-to-head advantage over Memphis, but it also has a loss while unbeaten candidates remain elsewhere. The best early comparison is not a protected December ranking.

My verdict: Boise State moved to the front because it absorbed a punch and controlled a quality opponent for an entire half. It did not end the race. It raised the standard for everyone in it—and for itself.
