StanfordMalachi Toney shattered a forty-plus year receiving record while Darian Mensah’s five-touchdown debut fueled a high-powered Miami Hurricanes offensive clinic in a commanding road victory over the Stanford Cardinal. Sophomore wide receiver Malachi Toney was arguably the biggest star entering Friday's game.
The 18-year-old immediately picked up where he left off last season. On the second drive, Toney kept breaking down the Cardinal's secondary.
He caught a 12-yard pass, then scored a four-yard touchdown to give the Hurricanes a 14-3 lead in the first quarter. The previous record holder was Phillip Dorsett with 157 yards against Georgia Tech in 2012.
After a quiet second half, Toney made himself known again with a 47-yard touchdown. He finished with 11 catches for 234 yards (total), which set a new program record for a receiver in a single game.
